People don’t do research on an iphone. They do it on their desktop or notebook or UMPC. I found some voice recognition software named Tazti speech recognition that actually is a free download and performs voice searches of Google, Yahoo, MSN, Wikipedia, Amazon, eBay and many other websites. It also lets me log into and navigate Facebook and Myspace by talking to my PC. It really works well.

Here’s their youtube demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1tt_aeIAM8

I think the most logical support for a rumor of "Apple working on a search engine", which I consider Fanboi rumor mill looking for a story when nothing is happening, would be that Apple is working on a search engine in order to let Google subtly know if they step on toes with Android, or Google Gears, that there can be alternative solutions.

They aren't really competing that closely. Any multitouch patents that Apple doesn't have tied up, MS has tried to rally under 'Surface', which MS demos as proof of concept immediately before an Apple event such as iPhone release or WDDC.

Google gets much more fuel from being open as possible to every platform they can, since they sell eyeballs PERIOD, not exclusivity to eyeballs.
