"But aside from Opera Link, a bookmark-syncing utility that isn’t supported by all versions of the browser, it hasn’t done much to date."

Sort of hard to make a newly created feature work on old versions, isn't it..?

-- I’m going to switch to the Opera 10.0 alpha as my main browser for the next few days, and report back on my experiences.

Can't wait to see the review!

-- Still, I love the fact the Web circa late 2008 has room for so many browsers.

I don't think it's hard for a browser to stay in the marked if it is committed to standard compliance. Opera does a great job acing Acid 3 and removing bugs which they introduces to mimic IE's behavior back in day.

Is long as web sites do not sniff the browsers Opera, Safari and others just work. Because of that all those debates about the features and more importantly market share are becoming irrelevant and that's a good thing.

If you look at the bottom of http://www.opera.com/browser/next/ there's a small diagram with new features pledged for beta. Alpha introduced new engine – with @font-face support!
