I bought a G10 back in early August and I love it! For a while, I had just about given up on taking photos (I got lazy), but with this camera, I feel like I can take quality shots with minimal effort (and lots of fiddling with the dials!).

I’m a fan, but now I’m curious about the G11…

The G10 will zoom while shooting video you just don’t have it on the correct setting. Cannon in it’s stupidity didn’t make the default setting the “standard” setting out of the 3 video options. Go to the video setting and rotate the “pinwheel” by the screen one or two clicks and you’ll get the “standard” setting that allows zooms.

In other cameras, can’t remember which, they made the decision to turn the zoom off because its sound would be recorded. Not sure if this is the reason, but if so, the decision should always be left to the user.

Deal breaker: no zoom in video mode? LAME! I hate to be fussy– but I REALLY hate lugging around and extra (video) camera if I don’t have to!

You wrote “Canon decided that the focus and zoom are fixed and based on the values selected for the first frame”. I don’t know why they do that but they are not alone. I’ve seen two other camera that does that. The last one I seen is the Olympus SP-510Z: no zoom when video capture has started. There is probably a reason why… Maybe CPU is too busy compressing to try to autofocus…

I have this exact same model and agree with both the good and bad in your post.

I’ve purchased $150 Canon Elph models and I also purchased an $1100 Canon SLR. Both were great but the G10 is perfect because the Canon SLR requires lenses, cases, flash, cleaning and maintenance and it’s super bulky. The little SD700 powershot just sucked.

With the G10 I can really capture what the eye sees and sometimes more and I’m not stuck carrying around a ton of lenses.
