It’s just a patent–and it doesn’t jibe very well with Steve Jobs’ declaration that anyone who designs a device that uses a stylus has failed, by definition. But I for one love the idea of an iPad with a screen you could draw on using a pen.

I've always interpreted that statement to mean anyone who designs a device that ONLY uses a stylus has failed, which is how most of the PDAs that were in the market at the time were designed. I think he's a smart enough person to realize that users, especially artistic types, require pen input from time to time, but to make it the only input method limits you.
