New Gmail Almost Here

By  |  Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 9:26 am

Gmail is about to begin rolling out the new look which it’s been testing for months. Judging from the test version, which I’ve been using, it’s a major upgrade–for one thing, it’s far less cramped and claustrophobic. (It doesn’t, however, seem to introduce one feature which I’d kill for: The ability to flop the conversation view so the most recent messages are up top.)

Here’s Google’s video about the new version:

Google says it’ll be adding a “Switch to the new look” link to Gmail’s lower right-hand corner over the next few days.

A bit off-topic, but still kind of related: I signed in to Google Reader on my PC the other night and was presented with a new look. To be honest, I'm not fond of this Reader's new user interface — it's simply too pixel-consuming; everything seems to be optimized for touch-screen, which is not a common input device on PC's.

I managed to compact it by overriding the CSS rules using Stylish in Firefox and with the help of DOM Inspector, but wish it had the same density switching options available in the new GMail interface.

It's here. I was excited and changed to it. It marked EVERYTHING I had as "read" and has a jumpy interface. You cannot see all files on left and must click on it. There are no columns and no colors indicating change. Tiny icons and no text. Icons change and move a bit. The changed search so it's okay but non intuitive. You must guess where to find it (drop down menu). No visible way to create a fliter . . . I'll looke further.

AND THERE'S NO WAY I CAN FIND TO CHANGE BACK !

Typical of Google to be sure we have no choices. And

Google is hoping that making this new changes it will be easier and more familiar for the millions of GMail account owners to actually use Google+, that’s desperately lacking human activity! http://www.vectorash.ro/gmail-just-got-a-new-look
