No doubt, watching a TV show or mobile in high definition is miraculous. The picture is sharper than sharp (so much so that like it or not, you can see the pores on an actor’s face).

I’m a DirecTV subscriber, but I’m too cheap to pay their extra fee for high definition service, so I decided to try an HDTV indoor antenna.

Off-The-Air Reception: Mind-blowing and Free

Terk sent me two antennas to try, both sleek looking jobbers. (Though if you’re a DIYer, you can build your own. And here are plans for a portable version.)

Portable high-definition antenna.

The indoor version (Terk FDTV2A Omni-Directional Amplified Flat Digital HDTV) is about the size of a small, thin notebook. It has 360 degree reception and comes with a bracket that lets you mount it a number of ways. I just placed it on a shelf near the TV.

Amazon sells the indoor antenna for about $45. There’s no skill needed to install it. Plug it into the TV’s antenna input port and move the antenna around to find the reception sweet spot. You might have to experiment with the antenna’s powered amplifier to get the best signal. You can make your job easier by giving AntennaWeb your street address; the site will help you orient the antenna’s direction; they also provide a useful FAQ with insights about high definition antennas.

With the antenna plugged in, I whizzed through the TV’s setup to decide which stations were keepers. Except for ABC, I picked up all the major networks, plus each of the multicasting sub-channels, as well as local channels, such as the Spanish speaking stations, and a couple of Asian-language feeds. The FCC has a list of HiDef broadcasting stations and there’s valuable info about antennas and channels (hit the pause button to ignore the dated video pitch) from the Consumer Electronics Association, a trade association.

One problem I couldn’t solve: If I walked in front of the antenna, CBS would fade out until I sat back down.

Terk’s outdoor antenna (TERK FDTVO Omni Directional Amplified Flat Outdoor) takes more skill to install (well, duh…). I tried setting it in the attic as well as outdoors, on the roof. The signal was as good as the indoor antenna and I got all the same channels, including ABC, and had no issue with CBS fading.

Amazon's price for Terk's outdoor antenna is about $65.

HD Antenna? It Ain’t For Me

After a few months of free, off-the-air broadcasts, I’m dismayed to say that it isn’t worth the bother. That’s because it didn’t take long for me to sorely miss the key feature on the DirecTV receiver we use: Fast forwarding through the commercials of shows we’ve recorded. I also miss the quick rewind and the ease of recording shows.

One solution was to find a receiver for off-the-air broadcasts. That wasn’t easy.

TiVo was the only one I’ve found that accepts a high definition antenna signal, but it’s dreadfully expensive. I searched for–and couldn’t find–a TiVo-like PVR or a DVR set-top box. (And before you write about any scheme that involves a PC, take note that I didn’t use Darryl’s advice below…)

So I asked the experts on the CD_ROM YahooGroup for advice. (CD_ROM has been around for ten years; despite the name, members talk about anything involving video and audio. Join here.) Here’s what I learned:

Susan Semple told me about the Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder. It sells for about $250. There are rave reviews on Target’s site, but more than one Amazon buyer pointed out a few serious-enough deficiencies for me to cross it off my list.

No one seems to like the Dish Network DTVPal DVR–and I’m not willing to invest $400 on an about-to-be-released, first-generation Channel Master DVR.

Despite my admonitions, Darryl Gittins, the CD_ROM moderator, had a PC-based, geeky suggestion:

Here’s a crazy side-consideration for using a noisy PC for in-the-living-room: If you have a basement under the living room, drill a 1-inch hole through the floor (apologize to your wife later), put the PC in the basement, run the video cable, and a USB cable (for a USB hub to run USB devices, such as the RF receiver, the keyboard and mouse) through the floor into the living room. Sure, you can’t easily access the CD drawer and such, but it otherwise works great, and it’s quiet! (Yes, I actually do this for TWO systems in my house).

Your decision may be different, but I’m returning the antenna to Terk, and forgoing a high def image. Want to talk me out of it? Give me some suggestions; I’ll post the best in a future newsletter.

After several months of private testing, followed by an open beta, DirecTV has formally introduced their whole-home DVR service. As a fan of the ‘hub and spoke’ digital distribution model, the MoCA-based solution looks quiet compelling. Of course, DirecTV subscribers would need at least one HD DVR. But each additional room (up to 15!) can be outfitted with a less pricey HD receiver to schedule or view recordings from the primary DVR. Free would be nice, but you really can’t go wrong a low $3 monthly surcharge.

Thanks, Jon!

Liberty Media, which owns and operates DirecTV, will invest $530 million in the troubled company in the form of several loans, including $250 million right away. That up front payment will help Sirius XM to pay off the $171.6 million of debt due today.

The rest of the funds would go towards funding the day to day operations of the company. The second phase of the loan would go to pay off debts owed by XM Radio, which has its own set of financial problems.

In return for the much needed infusion of cash, Libery Media would get seats on the board and enough stock to represent a 40% stake in the company. It also means that Karmazin has a much better chance of keeping his job.

“We are pleased to have come to this agreement with Liberty Media, particularly in light of today’s challenging credit markets. Liberty’s investment is an important validation of what SIRIUS XM has already achieved and a vote of confidence in what we will achieve,” he said in a statement announcing the deal.

Plus: Two Google Chrome items (inevitably!) and two iTunes items!

The Return of DirecTiVo
Once upon a time, a lot of DirecTV customers did their recording using TiVos. But then DirecTV dumped TiVo for its own homebrewed DVRs, and TiVo released high-def DVRs that only worked with cable TV, not satellite. (It’s one of the reasons I signed up with Comcast rather than DirecTV when I moved into a new home.) But today brought good news for anyone who loves both TiVo and DirecTV: The companies are friends again, and have announced that TiVo will develop a high-def DVR for DirecTV–and won’t sue DirecTV over DVR patents, as it’s done with Dish Network. Anything that increases the number of TiVo users in the world and thereby increases the company’s chances of long-term success sounds good to me.

Chrome EULA Drama
“You give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and nonexclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.” So read part of the end user license agreement for Google’s Chrome browser. Lotsa bloggers were, understandably, agitated. But Google says it was all a mistake–it reused some boilerplate language from other EULAs for other Google products–and it’ll fix it. Whew!

iConventions
Missed any of the political posturing at the Democratic or Republican conventions? Apple is providing audio of just about all the speeches at the iTunes Store, along with video of some of the major ones. I may check out some of them–I was on the road during the Democratic convention, and won’t be home for John McCain’s acceptance speech tomorrow night. Hey, I’m a political junkie. If you listen to any of this stuff while jogging, however, I feel kind of sorry for you.

iTunes Scuttlebutt
Apple has scheduled a press event for next Tuesday, and it’s all but definite that it will involve new iPods. New iPods generally mean a new version of iTunes–and Digg’s Kevin Rose has posted some rumors about the iTunes upgrade we’ll supposedly see. Rose says a new “Genius” feature will create playlists of songs in your collection that go well together and will recommend songs you should buy from the iTunes store; there’s also supposed to be a new Grid view, HD TV show downloads, and a new music virtualizer. It all sounds plausible enough. But does this mean that Apple won’t introduce the all-you-can-eat music plan that’s been rumored? Who knows? At least we don’t need to wait much longer to find out.

Firefox: We’re Not Slow
At Google’s Chrome press conference yesterday, it touted some JavaScript benchmarks that showed Chrome beating Firefox 3. Today, Mozilla countered with a different set of tests that show TraceMonkey, the upcoming revise to Firefox’s JavaScript engine, beating Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine. However, John Resig ran Google’s original tests on TraceMonkey and they showed it to be slower than Chrome’s V8. Except that Mozilla says that that’s because of some issues that they’ll fix before TraceMonkey debuts in Firefox 3.1. Confused yet? Bottom line: The only speed tests that ultimately matter are your own impressions, and if a speed difference isn’t big enough for you to notice, it’s not of much value.
