Windows 7 Beta: Back Again Until 1/24

By  |  Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 10:50 pm

windows7-logoAfter an embarrassing false start, Microsoft has put the Windows 7 beta download back online. It says it’ll be available until January 24th, and it’s removed the initial cap of 2.5 million downloads it had set.

If my experience is any evidence, it has things under control–I snagged the beta without incident, installed it easily, and am adding applications now, mostly with good success. (Everything’s worked well so far except my HP OfficeJet printer’s setup software.) More thoughts soon; if you’re running W7, I’d love to hear yours, too.

I installed it this weekend, and the only problems so far has been a issue with the audio crackling with my x-fi card, and had to run the driver for my Laserjet 1300 in vista mode. I think the sound problem is a driver issue. With those two exceptions, it runs great.

Installed it via BootCamp on a late 2008 white MacBook – no hassles so far. The provided drivers on the Leopard disk installed with no hitch. Office 07, Firefox, and several other programs work fine.

I hate to say it, but it’s not that bad. They did some decent things with the UI (about time, really.)

I downloaded it successfully, got a couple of keys, and a few cans of soda to drink while it installs and… my DVD burner dies. I was actually anticipating Windows 7, unlike most other pre-release versions of Windows, Windows 2000 excluded. Hopefully, I’ll get that new DVD burner very soon.

    Download if you dare.
