Mattel, patent filed January 2nd 1981

Mattel’s World Championship Baseball, its last baseball handheld, used an electrofluorescent display that allowed for on-screen animation–very crude on-screen animation, but a step above LEDs blipping back and forth. Here’s a schematic of the display, showing the balls and players which could be illuminated to depict the animation. (Note the hitter’s multiple bat positions.)
