AMD LogoI’m happy to announce that we’re cooking up a new Technologizer feature that will let members of the Technologizer community pose questions to tech companies–and I’m equally happy to report that the first company that’s agreed to field your queries is chipmaker AMD.

If you’ve got a question for AMD–about its products, the state of the chip race, the future of computing, or anything else–please post it as a comment here. We’ll collect the questions you post and publish a story soon with answers.

Also welcome: nominations for other companies who you’d like to have the chance to shoot questions at.

What’s the status of the new Global Foundry’s chip fab plant planned to be built in upstate (Malta) NY?

When will it be in production and do they plan on making AMD chips only?

  2. Fernando Garcia Says:

I have always asked the following question.
Why is it that AMD,will not step up advertising?
A good 70% of the consumer public, still does not know what AMD is.
I used to work for Best Buy and on the average day,1 out of 8 persons I would speak to knew what AMD was.Whenever I asked a customer, about processors automatically they would say Intel.

  3. Ronald Hoel Says:

Has there ever been a final fix for AMD processors and XP SP3? I have never seen a final solution for that problem. I am still using XP SP2 and waiting.

  4. Justin Abrantes Says:

Why did AMD decided to manufacture quad cores under the name of Athlon? The same way with dual core phenoms, will that be more confusing for non-AMD users?

  5. Jay Says:

I am having problems with my AMD athlon and my ATI all in wonder tv tuner
Over a year ago it wanted me to upgrade software and it has never worked since nothing work the guide or the tuner. Can anyone help?

  6. Richard McManus Says:

Like Ronald, I too am waiting with XP SP2, and SP3 is pressing me every day to install it. I’m afraid to! I have an AMD 2GHz Athlon 2400+ processor in a machine built by Powergistic. This waiting game is also preventing me from getting additional updates according to the MS update service. It says I must install SP3 first.

I have a 64bit Gateway with ATI Radeon HD 3200 Catalyst and an AMD Phenom (TM) 9600 Quad-Core Processor 2.30GHz, desktop.
Got an error message that read: “Warning – the Catalyst Control Center is not support by the driver version of your graphics adaptor.
Please update your ATI graphics driver or enable your ATI displays manager.”
I went to download the driver only to see that my desktop HD 3200 was listed under Laptop Drivers. Huh? What do I do? How can that be? My computer works fine. Have had it since April and this is the first time this message has popped up.
    Thank you for your help,
    Jacquie

  8. Ron Harris Says:

Does or will AMD offer a chipset for the competition’s Core i7 processors?

  9. PJ Blake Says:

Why does my HP/Vista laptop with AMD chip get sooooo HOT and lockup all the time and my other exact same laptop with Intel doesnt get so hot and lock up?

  10. Patrick Moorhead Says:

Sorry everyone for the delay. I wasn’t notified of the commments coming in.

@Bill Pytlovany- I have an inquory into GF folks, but in the meantime here are the most recent details. http://www.globalfoundries.com/about_us/locations/saratoga_county

@Fernando Garcia- I think the best way to answer that is one of focus. We focus on making our customers and their channel partners successful by investing in them, not co-opting their brand. And we make the corresponding investments there. For those people who are specifically focus on the “processor” we have very high awareness and market directly to end user groups. These include but not limited to enthusiasts, gamers, DIYers, F1000 and govt ITDMs, etc.

@Ronald,Jay,Richard- I am technical, but not enough for support. I have SP2 on 5 of my machines with no issues. And I have multiple tuners. On SP2 I recommend first asking the OEM, and if no joy there, please go go to our support site next. http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx

    @Justin- I can’t comment on any rumors. 🙂

@jacquie dodes-walter- Go to this link http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx Choose OS—> Integrated/Motherboard—–> Radeon HD 3200. Sorry for the inconvenience.

@RonHarris- We offer ATI Radeon HD GPUs for the Core i7 but not chipsets.

@PJBlake- please let me know exactly which models you have, both AMD and Intel, and I may be able to figure it out. Also, make sure that your power settings are set to “HP Recommended.” That initiates AMD PowerNow CPU technology. And if you have an ATI GPU, you have ATI PowerPlay set “on” in ATI Catalyst Control Center. This initiates variable power profiles in the GPU.

I have an Acer Extensa series and run Vista Home Premium 64. I would like to know when an updated graphics driver will be relased for a 64-bit system?

My system scan states the “current driver” is installed, but error reports still show the inactive graphics driver after I downloaded an update for a Vista 64.

Will there be a fix for AMD 64-Athlon(2)/ATI Radeon Xpress for accurate HD Display any time soon?? Thank you!

  12. Wayne Smith Says:

Recently I had to replace my processor (Athlon dual core 64 5200+) which was rated at 2.6 ghz with 1024 meg L2 Cache.
The replacement processor (same 5200+) is rated at 2.7 ghz with 512 L2 Cache. Is there any difference in performance between the 2 processors?

    Thanks.

  13. Ray Says:

When are they going to publish more drivers, particularly old ones for ATI?

  15. George Says:

Hi I am a longtime AMD fan and I have not bought a computer if it did not have an AMD CPU in it. Of course now I build my own still using AMD and I just was thinking that when you went from single core to dual-core and also again from 32-bit to 64-bit, that the experts thought that the performance might nearly double but that was never the case. It seems to me that you come out with CPUs that have the bare minimum number of pins to support the technology while Intel seems to be a hundred or more pin counts ahead of you. With that said, how does the pin count affect the efficiency of the CPU? And have you considered significantly adding the number of pins, since you did not when you converted from single core to multi-core?

    Thanks

Harry, I have a HP Pavilion ZV5000Z (DP523AV) notebook with AMD Athlon XP-M000+ (1.6 GHz) Processor, Win XP-3. When I first got it the instructions said that i could only install up to 1.3 gig of RAM.
it now tells me that i can get up to 4 Gig of Ram, is this true?
