The article by Gruber is “interesting”. He seems to be suggesting that computer makers should bring back the “good old days” when each computer maker had their own hardware, their own OS that ran on their hardware, and their small eco-system of expensive apps that ran on their OS and hardware.
The majority of HP’s customers are businesses. Businesses want computers that are cheap and they want computers that are commodities. The idea that HP could come out with their own OS and sell that product to their business customers is pretty silly. Maybe HP would entertain the idea of having a line of computers for consumers that is completely different than the computers they sell to businesses, but it seems pretty unlikely.
