This sounds like exactly the right thing for Amazon to do. It's the same old Kindle, only with a real screen, and with touch instead of buttons. And 7 inches is brilliant, because they get to play the paperback to iPad's hardcover book. At $249 it sounds a little high, but on sale for $199 it sounds a lot better.
I really like that they built their own device, with their own interface, and their own experience. That means that they can be responsive to their users (if they want to), and iterate rapidly on the software, pushing out updates to users and getting their feedback like Apple does, making fixes and adding features that matter, making the device better with each passing month.
