When Microsoft rolled out its major Hotmail upgrade last year, one big new feature was Active Views–the ability for Hotmail to do stuff such as as display Hulu videos and Flickr slideshows right in your inbox, as well as identify e-mails with shipping-service tracking numbers in them and show the package’s status. Today the company is announcing some additional Active View capabilities that let Web companies produce e-mails that behave a whole lot like Web pages. The idea, as before, is to let Hotmail users take action on e-mails without having to hop out of Hotmail at all.

LinkedIn Previews New Tools
I’m on Twitter all day long, and Facebook nearly as often–not just because they’re fun, but because they’re useful research tools. LinkedIn? I find it handy when I want to look up vital facts about a particular person, but I don’t spend that much time there otherwise.
Here at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, however, LinkedIn unveiled Signal, a set of still-in-beta tools for searching, filtering, and otherwise wrangling all the stuff that goes on among your LinkedIn contacts. They haven’t shown up in my account yet, but look interesting…

Outlook Gets LinkedIn (and I Get Frustrated)
Last November, Microsoft announced an add-on for Outlook called the Social Connector. At first, it only worked with new social networking features in the company’s SharePoint 2010 intranet platform. On Tuesday, it got interesting even for Outlook users who aren’t on SharePoint, as Microsoft and LinkedIn announced LinkedIn for Outlook, which uses the Social Connector to weave together the Outlook and LinkedIn experiences. (Microsoft says that similar features for Facebook and MySpace are on their way.)
