Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

[UPDATE: I thought I took this picture, which I found on my hard drive — but it’s actually by Tim Moynihan, my former PCWorld colleague. My apologies to Tim for claiming it was mine.]

Lots more thoughts to come, but for now, a photo I Tim Moynihan snapped at Macworld Expo in 2008. That’s Jobs with the original MacBook Air. And he’s wearing the smile I’ll think about when I think about the extraordinary impact he had on a company, an industry, and an era.

Lights, Cameras, Jared!

Say, look who’s on Techheads.tv, discussing Steve Jobs’ resignation and other topics: our own Jared Newman, talking with Pete Pachal of PCMag.com.

Steve Jobs Steps Down the First Time: The 1985 Press Coverage

In 1985, John Sculley–Apple’s president and Steve Jobs’ partner and confidante–became frustrated with Jobs’ management style. He forced Jobs into a role as Apple’s chairman that was designed to prevent him from making any decisions. A few months later, Jobs resigned and founded NeXT. And that, it seemed, was that.

The saga got a lot of coverage in the press–not as much as this week’s Jobs news, but a lot. It’s fascinating to look back at it. And I don’t blame anyone who failed to understand the implicates of Jobs leaving back then or even cheered his exodus. I mean, who would have believed you if you’d outlined the story to come?

Steve Jobs Steps Down

So it’s happened: Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple. He says he can “no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO,” but would like to remain as Apple’s chairman, and as a director and employee. And to nobody’s surprise, he advises that Apple execute its succession plan and name Tim Cook as the company’s new CEO.

Jobs doesn’t specify the reason for stepping down, but it’s clearly due to the health problems that led him to go on medical leave in January–his second such leave since 2009, but one which he took breaks from to preside over Apple’s iPad 2 event in March and its WWDC keynote in June.

Lots more thoughts to come.

Steve Jobs is Present and Presenting

The first bit of news from the iPad 2 event? Tim Cook and Phil Schiller were out mingling with the press, and Steve Jobs walked out on stage to present the keynote. “We’ve been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss today,” he quipped. Wonder what the post-mortem on this event is going to look like now. Will it be about Steve or the iPad?

Steve Jobs, Like You've Never Seen Him

For decades now, we’ve known Steve Jobs as a confident, photogenic personality. But video has now surfaced on YouTube of a young entrepreneur that looks much more meek, nervous, and well–hairy. It’s unclear when this video may be from (it’s believed to be around 1978), but Jobs appears to be in his 20s.

Whomever is off camera also informs him “they can see you in New York,” which means the interview aired on national television. I know we have a few longtime Apple fans on Technologizer. Maybe someone recognizes his appearance here and can able to tell us where he appeared?

One of my favorite lines, after they ask him if he needs anything: “You need to tell me where the restroom is, too, because I’m deathly ill, actually, and ready to throw up at any moment..”
