Ridiculous: Premium Game Includes Night Vision Goggles

By  |  Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 6:57 pm

callofdutyprestigescreenIf you like playing video games, and tend to snoop around a lot in the dark, Activision’s got a proposition for you.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Prestige Edition was revealed today, and it includes night vision goggles — not replica goggles that look good on your mantle, but fully-functioning, paint-everything-green night vision specs.

Mum’s the word on pricing for the package, which also includes typical collector’s edition fare such as a book of concept art. Most Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 console games cost $60, with collector’s editions often costing $80 or higher. The inclusion of night vision goggles in Modern Warfare 2’s Prestige Edition will likely drive the price way up.

Limited edition video game packages never appealed to me, as someone who tries to be frugal about gaming. When a special bundle costs more than $100, that’s money you could’ve spent on an oldie but goodie in the bargain bin. I’d rather have that than a Master Chief helmet on my mantle, but I understand the value in showing your gamer cred.

Still, night vision goggles? Those don’t even look good on display — despite the included head sculpture — unless your living room features a mannequin in military garb.

So my challenge is this: If anyone here is considering the Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Pack, please justify your purchase. I genuinely want to know what use for night vision goggles you have in mind. Only then can I understand where video game fandom ends and total ridiculousness begins.

Well… I DIDN’T plan on getting anything like that until now. But I do have a few usages for the NVG. As someone who likes to be prepared , I would definately love them for a blackout kit. Not to mention how useful they would be for camping. Dark trails would be much brighter thanks to starlight illumination and a pair of NVGs. I try to go camping in algonquin at least once a year so.. that would be wonderful.

What? the pair included with the game retail for like $250. that’s an incredible value. You get two toys for the price of 1.25 toys. Have you ever purchased a pair of binoculars or a telescope, then realized, “holy ***, I could’ve invested my money in risk-free treasury bonds and retired .016 days earlier”? If so, go invest – although the recent past would teach you that you have no ***’ng idea what the best way to invest is. On the margin, it’s not a big deal, fyi – cut out burgers and alcohol before this awesome game.

Just reserved a set from Game Stop. These fully functional goggles are like way over $350. The game, the kit plus the goggles are only $150, seeing that just the game is like $60, so I technically only paid $90 for night vision goggles. I say that a good deal, though I don’t know what use I’ll have for them, but it’ll be cool to have them anyway.

Ditto – The game alone would be $60-$65, I’ll get the $150 edition. Even tho I have no real need for NVG, I think they’d be fun to play around with

  5. The Gamer Says:

The goggles themselves are only worth about $80. They do not use starlight or moonlight to see but instead infrared led’s. The range on them is only about 50 feet. They may be cool to play with but they are still limited in functionality. You can alternate between greenvision and black and white views. The $150 for the package is a fair price considering all the extras that come with.

  6. Jack Says:

Looking at the goggles, I can tell you that these are NOT military grade. The goggles use many little infrared led’s to see in the dark instead of amplifying the ambient light. While they may be a cool toy, you can get much more compact versions of the same thing. However, as with all generation 1 NOD that use IR flashlights to see, you will be broadcasting your position to anyone else in the area with night vision.

  7. Mike Says:

Jack, Night vision goggles that need IR LEDs are actually considered Gen 0. Basically like you said, it’s a flashlight that only people with these or other Gen 0 devices can see.

My dad gave me a Bushnell Binoculars and they are quite superb, excellent optics and very nice zoom. i could watch sexy babes from several hundred meters.~**

Great blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally confused .. Any tips? Kudos!
