I used the LiveScribe smartpen, as cheesy as it sounds, it’s a great tool for school. I primarily used it for keeping track of my thoughts as I wrote. When I write, ideas run out ahead of my cogency and return with nebulous concepts beyond my ability to congeal them right away. Rather than lose them I used the audio record function and recorded my ideas aloud, shorthand. Later as I organized for a second draft, I would then review the concepts I had recorded and work the good ones into a second draft.
Same goes for editing and proofing papers and those of my friends.
Of course the pen has many different functions but this alone was my favorite.

I had one of those crappy PDAs you could get for $5 from Walgreens. Although it was crap, it helped some what.
