Apple-Approved iPhone Unlocking?

AT&T has cheerfully helped me unlock several phones in the past. I never understood why the iPhone should should be any different. Maybe it won’t be eventually.

This is commonplace where I live, and I'm sure that goes for many other readers. You phone the carrier, wait 24 hours and when you next sync with iTunes a message appears within iTunes telling you it has been unlocked.

It's commonplace here in Australia. In fact, you can buy them unlocked directly from Apple. From the Apple Online Store iPhone page:
"Buy your iPhone from Apple unlocked.
It works with the carrier of your choice.
Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store and choose your own GSM carrier. You can change carriers at any time.
It’s easy to set up.
Get a compatible SIM (iPhone 3GS) or micro-SIM card (iPhone 4) and select a plan from the carrier of your choice. Then insert the card and set up your iPhone using iTunes on your Mac or PC. With a few clicks, you can start making calls.

And further in Australia most carriers will unlock your iPhone as long as you are on a postpaid contract. I have been doing this since back with my N95 and both my iphones and a android for when I travel overseas so I can use a local sim. It seems lunacy in the US that people put up ATT ( I guess all your carriers are the same in this respect).
