Amazon is working on an update to the software in its Kindle e-readers with some worthwhile-sounding features–including the ability to share your notes and (at long last) see page numbers that correspond to the ones in dead-tree books. In an interesting movie, it’s letting Kindle owners download a preview version before it finishes up the software and pushes it out to all devices.

This isn't the first time Amazon has done a Kindle update on a "download now or wait for us to update you" sort of model. My early (Sprint) Kindle 2 was updated that way. Also, I have read other pieces about this update, and TechFlash points to The Word:
http://www.kindlepost.com/2011/02/early-preview-o…
where the first graf includes "coming to the latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G". That makes it appear to me that my early Kindle 2 doesn't get the update.

Yeah, no update for the kindle 2… which I think is crap (just got mine last summer). Good thing Amazon doesn't make mobile phones.
