A Supercar for Gadget Nerds

For my latest TIME.com column, I got to spend time with Audi’s new A7. It has a supercharged V6 engine, an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The A7 looks like a nice car for people into cars. I've met several people who absolutely adore them, including one who spent a small fortune to get one through Denmark's draconian car import laws (or so he explained).
The tech is nice, as its integrated, but I wonder if it's really all that terrible to get a la carte. My recent-model Garmin Nuvi features navigation with the icons (like an Apple for Applebees), traffic reports, and it even serves up coupons enticing you to nearby restaurants or other traveler attractions. Finally, it can serve as a Bluetooth speakerphone providing hands-free use of the phone while driving.
Add in a WiFi-to-3G gateway of some sort and I don't see what you'd miss compared to the Audi offering.

All these bells and whistles are intriguing and look as though most are becoming standard in new cars (or at least a standard part of new car stereo systems). I wonder how much real use they are. I paid for a few thousand dollars worth of electronic gadjets for my new BMW but I hardly use any of them. Not to complain, but I've just found that I spend most of my time driving, actually driving!
