Ten Questions About Today’s Apple News

Almost 38,000 folks turned out for Technologizer’s live coverage of Apple’s WWDC keynote this morning. We had a good time. But as the comments came in from attendees, there was clearly a serious contingent of folks who still held out hope that Apple was going to announce a new iPhone today–and who just didn’t care that much about software and services. For them, no new hardware meant that the event was a letdown.

On Twitter, I responded this way:

This was among the most news-packed Apple events I can recall, and in its own way it was one of the most wildly ambitious ones. Apple is finally making the iPhone and iPad into autonomous devices that don’t rely on a Mac or Windows PC. It wants to store vast quantities of data for us and be responsible for safeguarding it and getting it to the right place. It’s making iOS look more like OS X and OS X look more like iOS. It’s not yet clear whether all of this stuff will pan out, and people who already bristle at Apple’s approach to the world will like this new, more fully Apple-centric version less than ever. But if you think the event was a big yawn because there wasn’t a new iPhone that was a bit thinner and a bit faster, you live in a different world than I do.

The Next Version of iOS: Predictions, Please!

[UPDATE: I’m closing the survey and compiling the results. Thanks, folks!]

At 10am PT on Monday, June 6th, Apple will hold its WWDC 2011 keynote, with news about OS X 10.7 Lion, the next version of iOS, and something called iCloud. I’ll be there in person at San Francisco’s Moscone West  for Technologizer’s live coverage, joined by Ed Oswald and Techland’s Doug Aamoth for color commentary.

You can join us on Monday at technologizer.com/wwdc11, and I hope you will. (You can also head there now to sign up for an e-mail reminder.)

With less than 48 hours to go, time is running out to make predictions about what we’ll learn. We already know most of the details about Lion, and iCloud remains fairly enigmatic. So let’s focus in on iOS 5, or whatever the next version of the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad operating system turns out to be called.

I’ve put together a survey that’ll let you make predictions about iOS 5 features and enhancements, (It’ll take you a minute or two to complete.) I’ll report on our aggregate predictions as a group before the keynote–and after Steve Jobs and company have spoken, we can see how accurate we were.

Click here to take the survey.  Thanks for participating, and see you on Monday.

Coming on Monday: Live WWDC Keynote Coverage

What’s Apple going to talk about at its WWDC keynote in San Francisco next week? Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.0, definitely. New iPhones, quite likely. Tablets and TVs and other dark horses, conceivably. Maybe. Well, probably not. But it’s not completely inconceivable.

I’m looking forward to being surprised–even if it’s by lack of surprise–and will be sitting in the Moscone Center audience as Phil Schiller and others take the stage at 10am PT on Monday. And I’ll provide live coverage of everything we learn as we learn it over at Technologizer.com/wwdc09. (If you’re the type who plans ahead, you can head there right now and sign up for an e-mail reminder.)

Meanwhile, I’m ending our Apple predictions survey at noon PT today, but it’s still open right now–if you haven’t taken it, please do so and get your chance at a $100 Apple gift certificate.

Share Your Apple Predictions, Get a Shot at a $100 Apple Gift Certificate

Apple WWDC PredictionsReminder! Reminder! Apple’s WWDC keynote is just days away, which means that the window for making predictions about what the company has up its corporate sleeve is rapidly shrinking. That’s why we need you to take our quick survey, which will let you make predictions about what Apple will announce. We’ll use the collective results for some stories both before the keynote and after. I’m hoping that you guys turn out to be better at guessing what Apple is planning than people who make their living doing so, but it’ll be fun either way.

If you take the survey, we’ll put you in a drawing for a $100 Apple Store gift certificate. Click here to take the WWDC Prediction Challenge.

Related plug: I’ll be attending the WWDC keynote and will provide live coverage of what we learn as we learn it at www.technologizer.com/wwwdc09.

A Layman’s Guide to Apple’s WWDC

macmondayMany had hoped that Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference would signal the triumphant return of Steve Jobs. It looks like that may not be happening, but there looks to be plenty of other possible outcomes for what we might see at Apple’s yearly developer confab.

Traditionally this has been a developer event, thus any announcements we see here usually are non-consumer. If its not consumer news, what should you expect? Announcements on Mac OS X, new computer systems, new development tools.

At WWDC 2009 it may be slightly different, but only because of the way Apple’s refresh cycle is falling combined with products it already had in the pipe that are ready for prime time. Below, I’ve listed what I think is the Most Likely, Likely, and Not Likely as a guide for those of us Apple fans who may not have the time (or will) to track every Apple rumor that comes across the wires. My thoughts are below the fold.

Before I forget: be sure to participate in our WWDC Prediction Challenge for a chance to win a $100 Apple gift certificate!

Jobs Still Absent for WWDC

Even though Apple says that Steve Jobs will return to Apple in June, the company said on Wednesday that a “team of executives” led by marketing head Phil Schiller would give the keynote on June 8th at its Worldwide Developers Conference. While it does not directly say Jobs won’t be there, it seems to suggest that its unlikely he will play a major role.

Jobs or not, WWDC looks to be exciting. Officially, the company will be delivering a final developer release of Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard,” as well as focusing heavily on iPhone OS 3.0, set to release during the summer.

Several Mac rumor sites have also pointed to the conference keynote as an opportunity to debut a refresh to the company’s desktop and laptop lines, but of course Apple is providing no details there.
