Optical mice have pretty much driven the old-style ball mouse into extinction today, but back in the 1980s they were exotic and expensive, and required the use of a weird shiny mousepad.  I bought one similar to this Sun example myself for about $100 circa 1988 for use with my beloved Amiga 500, and was awfully proud of it at the time.
