The JooJoo Cometh

Over at VentureBeat, Paul Boutin has an update on what is now the second-most interesting tablet device announced to date: Fusion Garage’s JooJoo, the former CrunchPad that until now has been notable largely for behind-the-scenes dramatics and legal wrangling.
The JooJoo has gotten decent reviews from those that have seen it in person–it’s got a bigger, wider, higher-resolution display than Apple’s iPad, and does Flash. On those other hand, it’s Web-only; there’s no JooJoo App Store, nor any JooJoo apps. It sells for $499, the same price as the base iPad.
Fusion Garage CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan told Paul that the JooJoo will ship by the end of the month. Assuming you’re intrigued by tablets at all, is this one tempting? Does the fact it’s the subject of a lawsuit filed by Michael Arrington, the man who proposed it in the first place, scare you off?

Wasn’t it 8-10 weeks beginning December? Their either going to be right on time or horribly late!
I am interested in this, but want to see them actually ship before I purchase one. I have fears it’s even more vaporware then the past year; until they ship a product, Apple’s secure in getting my money.

…and for the record, Flash is still an embarrassment in our industry; in fact, I’ve enjoyed not having it on my iPhone, and I’ll be the first to try and kill it on the Joo Joo if I get one!

I dunno… Plastic Logic’s Que line is more interesting to me. And more likely to stick around. (If they can drop their pricing.)

I looked into the Joojoo right after the iPad announcement, and it is a compelling device. It has a camera, a usb port, and flash support. My interest wained when I realized it only has 4GB of storage. The bottom of the line iPad has tons more on-board storage than this does out of the gate.

Do we not run into the same problem? Is this for media consumption or media creation? Even with a slick on screen keyboard, it would seem awkward typing anything beyond a short message on these devices. Yes, I know it is a Tablet, and that is the whole point. But perhaps this is why tablets, thus far, have not taken off….

The only advantage it has over the iPad is some ports and a camera. It’s heavier, has less memory, and no offline usability.
